Porn Gets Complicated

Not too long ago there was talk of placing restrictions on access to pornography in Malaysia. Internet users, many of them unmarried males aged between 18-29, were incensed and protested against what they saw as the state intruding yet again into the lives of the private citizen. This of course was not at all compounded by the realisation that from here on, masturbation would be less enjoyable and ejaculation will be just that much harder to achieve.

Like its consumers, porn itself has become a lot more diverse and complicated, which makes for a completely messy world wide web of tangled semen. Gone are the days when the most compelling script involved a pizza guy and two voraciously horny American vixens. If before viewers were content with fellatio, group orgy and the traditional missionary position, purveyors of porn are now spoilt for choice between – for better or worse – analingus, golden showers, highly acrobatic auto-fellatio, double penetration and a plethora of positions once only available in the steamy pages of the Kamasutra.

The mainstream movie American Pie achieved a milestone with the sexualisation of food. From now on, a banana and rambutan are not only good for you, they’re good for her, too. Just like tennis, there’s amateur and professional pornography. And like the game, bouncing balls and grunting Russian women make for an entertaining combination. For the cheap surfer who is too poor to own a credit card, amateur websites allow for users to exhibit themselves, among themselves, in an ultimate – and literal – tit for tat favour.

The widening acceptance of porn has allowed it to penetrate into the world of pop culture and vice versa, led by porn star Jenna Jameson’s debut into the mainstream and Paris Hilton’s Video Of The Year to counter the one-way intrusion. The globalisation of smut has meant the face of pornography is no longer the classically blonde, big busted bomshell from Sweden who goes by the name of Anna. Japanese hentai, exotic ebony and the legendary Arab stud (for the women, who form just about half of the global porn audience) compete with each other for the absolute attention of sexually stimulated voyeurs.

In our sexually-charged world, life imitates art, and art seems to imitate porn, as evidenced by sexually-suggestive perfume ads and television shows. What we sometimes forget is that unlike the models and actors, an overwhelming majority of participants in the porn industry are in it due to circumstance rather than choice.
